WASHINGTON, D.C. - October 1, 2018 - The American Insurance Association issued the following statement in response to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico's agreement on a new trade pact:

"AIA has long supported modernizing NAFTA, while also preserving its existing benefits," said Steve Simchak, AIA vice president and chief international counsel. "In particular, we are pleased to see that the new agreement contains a strong commitment on cross-border data flows and storage that will benefit the insurance industry. That commitment will have a significant, tangible effect for U.S. insurers and reinsurers operating in Canada where the government requires the localization of data storage. It also fulfills one of Congress’s negotiating objectives for the Administration. We are continuing to review the details of the agreement, and thank the negotiators for all of their substantial efforts.”
